Sometimes, you really cannot foresee what is going to happening to you, as much as you try to connect the dots in advance.

I was offered an internship position (let's call it position A)at HP way back in March, and I didn't even get an interview for that, and I had always feel a little insecure as I'm afraid I might just to be doing mundane chores.

Then I received a call a month later from another manager saying that he would like to interview me for another internship position (let's call this position B). I was like: great, now I can consider 2 positions and see which one is better, and this one has an interview which allows me to ask questions about the position.

I went for the interview, and told the manager that if he wants me, I will take his offer instead of the previous one. My rationale is that I know for sure what this position entails, instead of the other one which is still in the fuzzy zone. I took a less risky route. However, the manager did not want me and I end up with position A, the original one that I was offered.

After talking to the student who took up the position B, he told me that the position is not really as the manager had described and he spends most of the time doing mundane work. As for me, I'm quite happy in position A, with great colleagues and I'm in charge of a real project (non-critical of course) which my findings could have a real impact in the next generation of products. It is exactly what I wanted from an internship, less the industry (I'm still reeling from not performing well enough during the interview with Lehman Brothers), but I'm still glad in generally.

The point is, if I had taken the less risky route, I would be in a situation which I detested; and as much as I tried to plan in advance, one really never know what you will get until you have done it.

Guess this whole thing validates what I have always believe in - we should take more risks in life, sometimes you will never know until you actually try it.
